Chapter Two: Chloe

Mitzy and I had been standing outside of Captain Cox’s office for close to an hour waiting for him to show up for the meeting we scheduled with him. He promised to finally fill us in on Maksim’s arrest after days of not telling us what the hell was going on. It’d been a pain in the ass trying to get information out of anyone. Even Gauge, Lucas, and Sydney were being tight-lipped about it. Mitzy believed that there was a specific reason the raid happened when neither he nor I were working, but everyone claimed it was purely coincidence.

And the fact that we weren’t told the raid was even happening.

And the fact that we didn’t even know Cox was still looking at Maksim for the time being.

And the fact that Cox had gotten a warrant for Maks’ arrest.

All purely coincidence… and I was the goddamn pope.

“You didn’t tell Cox anything about what Maksim said to you, right?” he said. “It says on his public record that he was arrested for terrorist threats against U.S. citizens.”

“What?”

Mitzy was scrolling through his phone with a frustrated frown on his face. “Yeah. That’s pretty much it, though. His facility and sentence are listed as unspecified.”

I crossed my arms and glanced sideways at him. “You know that all of this is shady, right?” I said to him quietly. “I mean, I know that Maks is who he is, but he hadn’t done anything warranting being raided and arrested--at least not that Cox knew. Whatever arrest he pulled, he pulled it out of the darkest part of his ass.”

“Well, it’s not like Cox isn’t known for that,” Mitzy replied, tucking his phone away. “Are you certain you weren’t bugged or anything? I mean, I hate to get personal, but did he take off all your clothes last time you saw each other?”

“Last time?” I remembered the fight Maksim and I got into when I realized that he was still into Katya and still planning to take her back to Russia with him and be with her. “No. Last time we didn’t get far at all, but I took a shower that night. I took everything off. There was no bug. Even if there was, I didn’t agree to that.”

“Well, you’re a cop, he’s a criminal. I think you’ll find that the ol’ court system will be more than willing to look the other way,” Mitzy explained. He looked around and I followed his lead, seeing that the rest of our cohorts were keeping a close eye on us, but looked away from us whenever we started to look around. “There definitely is some conspiracy going on around here. What that is, though, I’m not sure.”

I saw the way that Sydney, Gauge and Lucas were looking at me, almost like they’d been betrayed. My coworkers and I weren’t best friends by any means, but we were close enough, I thought. What reason they had to suddenly take Cox’s side and keep information from me when the main thing we’d bonded over was how much we all hated the guy, I wasn’t sure.
